A Few Questions 01 / Fjura

On building worlds of your own

Making Planets is a series of short exchanges on independent creative practices and the ways distinctive creative worlds are built, sustained and allowed to evolve.

Fjura is the floral practice founded by Simone Gooch, based between Europe and Sydney — fjura.com · @fjura_.

01Enough

Fjura’s work feels very reduced and precise, but also spontaneous and effortless. How do you find that balance? How do you know when something is enough?

Thank you for the observation. I have been touching flowers most days for close to 30 years and I feel connected to them; they bring me a lot of joy and comfort. The process of arranging flowers feels very natural and intuitive.

02Language

Has this visual language been there from the beginning, or did it take shape over time? What helped make Fjura’s world so recognisably its own?

I’m sensitive, stubborn and curious and am strongly attracted to nature and the visual arts. With life experiences and influences my work evolves. The flowers are the muse though, they inform the result.

03Process

When you begin a new project, what usually comes first: an image, a material, a space, a feeling — or something else?

More and more, the client has many references of what the result should be, which hinders my process and usually the result.

I consider the space, the flow of the event, the brand, the logistics and then start to think about the arrangements — the colours, the feeling, the vessels, the flowers.

04Independent

What does being independent allow you to do differently? And what makes it difficult?

Being independent allows you to explore your work, make decisions that resonate and be involved in all aspects of the business, which maintains a strong visual language.

Being independent is isolating, but this also feeds the work.

05Future

We are living through a time of great uncertainty. Does this affect the way you think about your work and its future? What helps you keep making and believing in what comes next?

I work in a considered way — every detail. I feel attention to details and natural beauty is required in our day to day more than ever.

Waste and excess is a real turn off for me and there is so much of it in the events, despite the state of our world — it’s madness.
